"Identity and Ideas"

Identity and Ideas is a new project by a group of wonderful international artists to explore how their Identity inspires their art.

The definition of identity: distinguish character or personality of an individual.
"Identity" is the combination of who you are personally and who you are as a member of a social group.
It encompasses memories, experiences, relationships and values.

I started painting roots and rhizomes when my sister started doing genealogy. We all have roots. Sometimes they are strong and clear, but they can also be broken or very tortuous. Next to our summer cottage begins a nature reserve, where trees felled by the wind have been left to rot on the ground. Over time, the rain has washed the picturesque rhizomes bare, to strong memories of trees which lived ages ago. For me, these rhizomes are symbols from past generations that we should not forget

Songs We Carry, Poems We Hold suggests the ephemeral nature of culture brought by families emigrating to Canada (my personal experience). The print imagery politicizes the fragility of migration by examining temporary shelters and the accretion of scavenged construction material. The images speak to what each of us might take with us if we were forced to leave our homes suddenly. The audio element presents international students singing or reciting about love of their country of origin, in their language of origin. Translations of these songs/poems form the text of my book.

I made this painting a couple of days after the Hamas attack. I strongly identify as a Jewish woman and this painting emphasizes this identity. As these many months of bloodshed and sadness keep going, Im struck by the world's antisemitism . This paintng is chaos and bloodshed.

As artists, painting from within our personal vocabulary and experiences, identity is of considerable importance. It helps define our world, our place in the world and how we relate to it. As an Irish person with Scottish and French Huguenot ancestry, this broadens my definition of myself and gives me access to a richer range of sources and inspiration. It leaves the door open to new ideas. I hope something of this range is there to be found in these works, which feature the Huguenot elements of who I am, but also with tell-tale traces of my personal diversity

I have been thinking of you and your idea for a new project Identity and Idea. I want to share with you all my work from the year 2018, I made 16 selfportrets in different but natural color combinations asking myself if the color would change my identitie...

I find myself enmeshed in many cycles as a woman, daughter, mother, artist, musician, grandmother, friend and citizen. Some of the cycles traverse each other, some are parallel.

This influences who I am, my roots and history, my thoughts. It also affects where I live, whom I meet, where I work and who I celebrate with.

I think this ensemble of all construes that is who I am as an individual, and is the source of my ideas as an artist.

In my view, Identity is a significant trigger of ideas.

Karmela! I made a video which is very abstract yet based on my and my husband's bodies. The name of the work refers to the visual phenomena of seeing one's self from above and outside of your own body. I believe it can fit the theme, as one aspect of identity is tied to our embodied experience as well as our closest relationships.

    Irene Christensen

Irene Christensen works intuitively engaging memory and emotions to produce art representing the full range of life from ancient to the present in streams of consciousness. She's known for her Concertina Book series which gathers iconic and symbolic tellings of her cognitive and psychological perception into shaped and narrow drawings.

This leporello book is called "All is conditional" 2023 110x8.25" (22 pages)

Babel has been my way of searching for identity.
To find your inner language in your art is a kind of identity.
The idea of art language helps to understand.

Global wings shows the idea of bringing together all people by inspiration.
Inspiration is a kind of wings that flies into the artist - and brings identity.

The UN Global Goals is the idea of bringing the world forward.
It is not so much your own identity that matters - it is the idea of others.
    From an I to we.

The Bird flies with its beauty - as a part of nature like woman and man.
That is the identity of nature - and my hopeful idea of climate.
